my hilarious students......
today after doing their assignment i asked them to write down any advice they had for me about dating, since i have a date tonight.
here, in all their glory, they are reproduced, all errors intact. ( 100% true. ) |

just wanted to share something with you all about my class.
we are just beginning a unit where we explore diversity issues through writing and reading and watching a movie (freedom writers of course!).
thursday i had the kids list stereotypes of certain groups and then we talked about it. that was entertaining. and i think they learned a lot and started to see stereotypes for what they are, which is assumptions that are not true about every single member of a certain group. ("they say that black people all like fried chicken, and yes i do like fried chicken myself, but i also know black people who are vegetarian" for example).
friday i gave them a writing assignment: to write about a time when they were personally affected by a stereotype... to think of a time when they were treated unfairly or someone made an assumption about them because of what they look like, their age, their gender, their race, where they come from, or what school they go to, or whatever. all the writing was anonymous so the kids could feel free to express themselves honestly.
the responses were very interesting.
so i decided to put together a bulletin board about stereotypes. i just finished typing out excerpts from some of the kids' responses.

i feel like such a heel going around asking for donations for my classroom but my kids deserve it so much. especially this year's bunch.

I'm a Spiritual Snob! | | A Spiritual Snob You meditate. You chant. You wear your spirituality on your sleeve. You would never set foot in a yoga class designed for physical fitness alone. You practice yoga to get closer to God. Your devotion, or bhakti yoga practice, inspires and uplifts most that come into contact with you. Unfortunately, those who are only beginning their spiritual journeys may not understand the language you use, and may become frustrated or confused by it. Make a special effort to be friendly and accessible to all who enter your presence--not just those who share your spiritual convictions--so more people can benefit from your constant soul-searching

here is some really sweet devotional poetry by rasakhan, who lived in the 16th century. it was translated into english by shyamdas, who led the retreat i went to last weekend. i think it gives some really good advice for living well.
Effortless Worship
Listen to everyone, but don't say a word. In this manner, remain in the world.
Perform your vows and practices with sincerity -- they will carry you across the mind ocean.
Greet all without negativity, and remain in the illumination of devotional association.
Rasakhan says, "Worship Govinda the way a village woman balances a water jug upon her head, with effortless concentration." |
